Now that the nice weather is here, it’s the perfect time to get into the outdoors with the help of your Benjamin Moore Retailer. Whether it’s painting your home, staining your deck, or creating a creative outdoor living space, enhancing curb appeal is a great way to express your personal style and get the most enjoyment from your home.
While exciting, the task of picking a new colour palette for your home’s exterior can be a bit daunting. Here are some considerations to ensure success.
- Tour the Neighbourhood. See which colours catch your eye. Note homes that are similar in style to your own.
- Consider Style. It may be a cue for your colour palette. If your home is a colonial, greek revival, prairie, or other distinctive style, respecting the integrity of the original architecture is important.
- Fit in. No matter how great your house looks, if it is out of context with the neighbouring homes, it won’t look good and neither will your block.
- Take Cues from your Landscaping. A house surrounded by woodlands looks jarring painted in pastels, but natural in earth tones. Climate also plays a role. Imagine a colour in stark, snowy winter as well as in lush, leafy summer.
- Consider Fixed Elements. You probably won’t want to change brick, slate, stone, stucco, roofing, and concrete. In general, the foundation or main colour should complement these fixed elements.
- Factor in Size. You may want to emphasize or de-emphasize certain features. Lighter colours visually grow a home or feature, while darker colours shrink them. Bright colours call attention to features, and neutrals let them fade into the background.
- Choose No More Than Four Colours. Use one for the main body, one for the trim (window trim, door frame, garage door), one for the accents (shutters, decorative details) and, if desired, a flash of colour for your front door.
- Look to the Experts. Browse pre-selected colour schemes or get ideas on colour combinations from the Benjamin Moore Exterior colour card, available at your either of our stores.
